Discover the Benefits of Chiropractic Adjustments During Your Pregnancy

smiling person getting shoulders adjustedPregnancy is an exciting time for many women, but it can also bring its fair share of aches and pains. Thankfully, chiropractic care offers a safe and natural way to manage pain during pregnancy. Chiropractors use specific techniques designed to reduce discomfort, while supporting the health of both mother and baby.

Let Us Know That You’re Expecting

Informing us of your pregnancy as soon as possible helps us understand which areas we need to focus on now. It’s important to continue keeping the mom at the level of care she’s been receiving.

For example, if she has been receiving wellness care for a year, our adjustments will now focus on the Webster Technique. Or maybe she’s a brand-new patient that’s only had care for a month or two, and has some other things going on. When we’re informed right away, we can shift our care a little bit, but also remain focused on the main problem to help promote healing as fast as possible.

And that may also change the frequency of the care, as we strive to get their body at optimal function and alignment as soon as possible. While earlier is better, even one adjustment is better than none, and it could have a huge impact on the rest of your pregnancy, labor and delivery.

Our Techniques

Our primary adjusting technique is Webster, which focuses on three aspects of body function. First, we look at the bone structure, making sure the joints are moving the way they need to, with a focus on the pelvis and sacrum.

Our second focus is on the ligaments. Dr. Liz uses the analogy of a hot air balloon, where the uterus is the balloon, and the ligaments are the four ropes attached to the pelvis. If one is tighter than the other, and the balloon is inflating, it will apply pressure in different areas. By adjusting the pelvis, there’s even pressure on each ligament.

Our third focus is on the whole body. Pregnancy is an activity driven by the sympathetic nervous system. Maintaining a balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system allows optimal development of the baby in utero. Adjustments help keep nervous system communication as open as possible throughout the body to ensure everything happens the way it should.

For the lumbar spine, we use Thompson Drop Table to get to some of the joints and bones in the spine, or the Activator® tool, which is extremely gentle. It’s important to adjust this area, as there are several nerves important for a baby’s growth and development.

We also have pregnancy tables, which allow the mom to lie face down comfortably, and pregnancy pillows, as well, to provide more support as her belly grows. Our moms really appreciate that!
